With the world coming down to your fingers with the help of technology, many traditional things have now taken a turn towards technological solutions. The common paper-based IELTS exam is also now available in a Computer Based IELTS exam format.
But the question lies, whether the paper based IELTS is different from the computer based IELTS?
No, the tests are the same. The only difference is the mode of exam and the experience.
Both the tests are the same yet the experience is different. To avoid any confusion, let’s understand in detail.
EXAM CENTRES:
- Paper based IELTS: The test is conducted by a designated institute in a classroom- like setup.
- Computer based IELTS: The test is conducted by a designated institute in a computer lab- like setup.
EXAM SECTIONS and TIMINGS:
The Writing, Reading and Listening sections are paper based in writing. |

In both modes, the Speaking section a face-to-face interview is conducted in a closed room. Now in the pandemic times, the speaking section is conducted in a closed room on a video call and face-to-face.

PEN or PENCIL?
For the paper based IELTS, the test is scanned for answers, and a pencil writing is always scanned better so it suggested using a pencil, however you can also use a pen.
On the other hand, in a computer-based exam, you are provided with a paper and pencil to take down notes for your Listening section.
TEST SCHEDULE:
- Paper based IELTS Schedule:
Writing, Reading and Listening will be conducted in this order only. Based on the test centre and the slot availability, the Speaking section is either conducted on the same day or up to 7 days, before or after your other tests.
- Computer based IELTS Schedule:
Listening, Reading and Writing will be conducted in this order for the computer-based IELTS test. Speaking section also will be conducted on the same day, either before the exam or after the exam.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY:
The difficulty level is the same for both the tests.
If you are comfortable writing on paper (and also have a good hand-writing) appear on a paper-based IELTS.
However, if you are a tech savvy person, and have a good typing speed, appear on a computer-based IELTS.
Choose your comfort and decide the mode you want to appear in.
Don’t forget that even if you appear for a computer based IELTS, you have to visit the test centre and appear for the exam. You cannot appear for the exam from your own house or computer. The test is to be taken only in a designated test centre.
